About SwearBible
SwearBible is a descriptive dictionary of profanity. It records how people actually swear in their own language, and what a word costs the person who says it.
Why a separate dictionary
General dictionaries handle swearing badly. They mark a word “vulgar” and move on, which tells you nothing about whether you can say it in front of a colleague, a grandmother or a police officer.
Every entry here carries the things that actually matter in use: how the word is pronounced, what it literally says, how hard it lands, and who it is aimed at.
How entries are built
A term belongs to one language. Its explanations do not: the same Dutch word can be explained in English, Dutch, French and German, and each explanation is written by someone who chose that language.
Readers rate entries on two separate scales — how good the entry is, and how offensive the word feels to a native speaker. Those are different questions and conflating them produces a useless number.
Editorial stance
Describing a word is not endorsing it. Where a word is used to attack people for who they are, the entry says so plainly instead of pretending it is neutral.
